Layla was enjoying a nice cup of coffee when her morning decides to get interesting. Watching Cobb storm into the quiet little cafe was funny, he didn't look like he belonged at all but there he was, disheveled and ordering some coffee as she sips her own. So this was how they were going to meet again.
Before he spots her, she closes her book and crosses her legs, waiting for him to notice her.
Honestly, she thought they would exchange some friendly - albeit probably tense = hellos and he would storm out again, but instead he sits across from her as if he intends to have a conversation with her instead. Which, admittedly, surprises her, arching an eyebrow at him from over her cup of coffee.
"Morning and I have plenty, do you want some of them?"
"Just a handful." Cobb won't need much time at all, really. "Marc tells me you two are renewing your vows. Congratulations on that."
He's genuine about that. He's happy for the both of them, especially considering how close he came to ruin it all for both of them because he thought with his dick and not good sense.
"Do want me to keep my distance that day?" he asks sincerely, almost gently. He doesn't want to make things more difficult on a special day. "Marc said he didn't care but we know Marc."
"Thank you," she gives him a smile at his genuine congratulations. Might be weird to get that from a man that nearly ruined her marriage, but really, she's forgiven Marc for worse, she can forgive Cobb.
Not that she won't kick his ass if he does something wacky again, but she trusts that it won't involve ruining her marriage a second time. Cobb seems remorseful enough about that to not do it again.
When he asks though, she gives it thought, because while she gave Marc permission already to invite his friends knowing Cobb was among them, she's faced with the reality of the man again. It gives her pause.
"Indeed, Marc is... Marc. But no," she means it when she says it. "You're welcome to come to our renewal even. I'm sure Marc would like to have you there."
There's no chance of Cobb ever doing something stupid like that again. He learned a harsh lesson that's stuck with him. One he's not likely to forget anytime soon.
He smiles a little at her answer. "Good, thank you."
Cobb's not sure that he wants to show up. He still feels a bit awkward about the whole thing though he does a damn good job hiding it. They've got something special and he feels like he stepped on that.
He taps his knuckles against the table as he stands up, as is his habit for some reason. "I'll keep that in mind about your invitation. Get some boot polish and everything."
She watches him tap his knuckles and stand up. She tilts her head at him, half expecting him to join her, but it seems he's not going to. That's fine.
Smiling up at him, she sips her drink and nods.
"Pretty sure Marc wants it up in Wintermute, so make sure to dress warm, wouldn't want you to get cold. I know what being a desert creature is like," being from the desert too, she knows how easy it is to catch a chill.
Cobb gives her a look. "You sure you want to stick with him? Clearly likes the wrong weather."
He's just teasing, of course. These two definitely have it very bad for each other. It's a nice thing to see. Cobb is glad they're getting this moment.
"I'll make sure to wear some layers." He does not have much in the way of fancy clothes but he'll find something nice for this. He'll make sure to make it warm too because he does not appreciate the cold.
The barista calls his name and Cobb nods to Layla. "I'll see you there. Enjoy your day."
He never meant for this to be a long visit. He just wanted to say his peace and get permission. Cobb grabs his caf and heads out almost as quick as how he arrived.
"He won't sign the divorce papers, so unfortunately I am," she laughs, it was something funny now, but she remembers being so upset at the time when it happened. How he didn't even sign them before serving her with them
She could have killed him at the time.
But when the barista purrs out Cobb's name, she raises a hand at him. "You too."
With that, she returns to her book and works on some more reading.
